The Boxee Box by D-Link HD Streaming Media Player ReviewBoxee has addressed some of the concerns I highlighted in my review with firmware updates. Please see the bottom of the review for updates.
-----
Out of the box, the Boxee Box runs the familiar beta version of the software, which is familiar to me as a prior Boxee user. Everything works fine, from what I tested, though the edges of the screen were cut off a tiny bit (not enough to cause a problem). While exploring all the options, I found that a firmware upgrade to version 1.0 of the Boxee software was available. I installed it, the unit rebooted, and it automatically started a quick-and-simple screen calibration utility. That calibration was useful, because the stock firmware had some overscan problems (that is, the edges of the screen were cut off) on my TV.
Version 1.0 brings with it a new, simplified user interface. I immediately had trouble finding my way around, and was a little disappointed that the experience was different than what I was expecting. My main problem with the new interface is that it now takes several more clicks to access local files (that is, anything on your attached drives or home network). That's my stuff, and that's what I primarily want a video player to be able to play. The old interface allowed you to toggle between your videos, and all available videos, very easily, once you understand where the option is. With the default firmware, after a minute of configuration, I was able to select "Shows" from the home screen and see just my shows. Now, I have to use other, more complex and time-consuming methods to do the same thing, such as "Files > Shows" or "Shows > Files".
The new interface does make it easier to start searches (just start typing), and is very attractive. I just would rather that it allow me to put my videos front-and-center. Networked content is fine, but my own content should have primacy over it. I think that new users will not have a problem with the interface, but experienced users should know that changes are in store for you.Networked Content
I had no problems streaming SD and 720p HD H.264 and DivX files from my NAS to the Boxee Box via my wireless-N network. Internet videos play well, but some Internet video sources are kludgy. Playing a video on Fancast, for instance, will open a web browser, showing the web page and the video in a small box. You have to use the remote to move the mouse cursor to the tiny "full screen" button and click it to get the video to play full screen. Good luck doing that on the couch, 10-20 feet from the TV! This is a big deal because the new Boxee software puts networked content front-and-center, in the "Most Popular" movies and shows pages. It's wonderful to be able to watch (ad-supported) shows that you haven't paid for, but it's a pain that you have to hunt for the full screen button, which looks different on every website, to do so.
Apps, on the other hand, are fantastic. TED and YouTube work exactly as you would expect, and there are dozens more available. Netflix and Hulu Plus apps have been promised; Boxee is working out the arrangements and hope to have these available by the end of the year (early next year for Hulu Plus). I hope for their sake that they do. Competing devices all support Netflix, and Netflix is, in my opinion, one of the most compelling sources for staming content.
Linking your online Boxee account to Twitter and Facebook seems like overkill at first, but it actually is pretty compelling to be able to watch videos that your friends are sharing. The RSS app is great, too. Through the Boxee website, you can subscribe to a whole bunch of video and audio streams (podcasts). Then, you can launch the RSS app and browse through the stream. It's very nice. I don't bother sharing what I watch on TV with my Facebook friends and Twitter followers, though, but I could if I wanted to. I think that if a large number of people I know used Boxee, this would be a lot more useful.
Another quibble I have with the UI is that "Watch Later" queue shows your most recent additions on top, and you can't sort it. To find the next episode of a series you've been watching from the queue, you have to scroll down. If I'm going to the trouble of queuing videos, doesn't that imply that I want to watch them in order, not in reverse order?Hardware
The unique shape of the box is controversial, but it is very small and you should be able to tuck it away somewhere. The remote uses RF, instead of IR, to communicate with the box. Therefore, unlike most (if not all) of your other components, you don't need a line of sight. I actually decided to put the BoxeeBox behind my TV; I can't even see it, but the controller works perfectly fine! The only thing better would be to have Boxee software integrated directly into my TV.
The box is very capable. Until new video formats arrive on scene, I don't see an immediate need for Boxee or D-Link to refresh the hardware. I just hope they continue to improve the software and make the updates available to the Boxee Box.Overall Impressions
The hardware is great. The box is small and silent (from across the room at least), the RF remote is fantastic, and the hardware overall is a good value over buying an ATOM/ION nettop and IR remote, and installing Boxee (beta) yourself.
Honestly, Boxee got off on the wrong foot with me for introducing so many changes to its UI at the same time it launched this product. Boxee 1.0 looks great--better than ever, really--but it is so simplified that it now takes extra button presses to get to my own content, and I think that was a bad move. I like the product, though, and will get used to the new interface soon enough.
I still think this is a geeky product that is trying to be usable for non-geeks, and just hasn't gotten all the way there yet. I'm a little disappointed in that, and hope that the software will be updated eventually to make it easier and faster to access both local and online content.
It is difficult for me to rate this product 3 stars, but I think that it just isn't quite up to snuff yet to earn 4 or 5. Some software updates and agreements with content providers could improve the user experience greatly (fix that full screen problem or provide a shortcut, please!). I am eagerly anticipating the Netflix app, and plan to award an additional star once it arrives.
-----
Firmware updates.
11/25/2010 update:
Boxee updated the firmware on Thanksgiving to improve playback issues and stability. This resolved an issue I ran into infrequently (after I wrote my review), in which some local MP4/H.264 files would start playback with sound but no video.
12/13/2010 update:
This is an important update to the user interface!
Boxee updated the firmware to allow users to put local content up front in the "Shows" and "Movies" sections (the top-level, giant icons on the home screen), or to allow online content to take precedence. This is accomplished in the least geeky way possible: After updating the firmware, you are simply sked whether you use the box mostly for local or online content. If you pick "local," the main "Shows" and "Movies" sections default to local content, and online content is buried one level deeper in the menus. You can toggle this preference, and refine it independently for Shows, Movies, and Apps, in Settings > General > Menu. Bravo to Boxee for listening to their users and pushing out this change.
The update also added an hourly scan option for your local content folders, and an icon in the "Local Shows" and "Local Movies" screens that allows you to kick off a rescan immediately. Hourly scanning is a huge upgrade from the daily scanning option, and the new location of the rescan command is a lot easier to get to than it used to be (in Settings > File Sources > [Share Name]).
Boxee also added sorting (A-Z, and Newest First) for Shows and Movies, though, sadly, not in the Watch Later queue. There are also new A-Z lists in the Local Shows and Local Movies sections, to help you browse faster.
There still aren't Netflix or Hulu Plus apps, unfortunately. I think the Boxee Box's UI and playback are shaping up incredibly nicely, though. Now they just need to match their competitors' online content choices.
1/20/2011 update:
Boxee upgraded the firmware to include Vudu support, a new sort option to ignore (if you want to) "A" and "The" when performing a title sort, and various minor fixes. The browser is now much more readable on the TV, and many more online videos open in full-screen. I also discovered a two-click method to put online videos into full-screen if they don't open that way: [menu] > [middle button] (select the double-arrows icon). Vudu's 1080p online movie rental app offers compelling content and great video quality. The Boxee Box still, desperately, needs Netflix and Hulu Plus to catch up with and overtake the competition. Nonetheless, I'm now convinced that this is the best video streamer for local content, and a quality competitor to Google TV and Roku for online content. Netflix should arrive soon; I will award another star then, because then it would be on par with competitors' feature sets.
2/14/2011 update:
After a long wait, and behind schedule (unfortunately), the Netflix app finally arrived on the Boxee Box with this firmware upgrade. The Netflix interface is quick, and the hi-def streaming looks fantastic. Hopefully Hulu Plus will arrive soon. The Boxee Box by D-Link HD Streaming Media Player OverviewWe get it - you want to the freedom to watch whatever you want on your TV: Movies, TV Shows, Sports, but also any other video that is available online. Garmin Foot Pod ReviewI bought the foot pod so I could use my 405CX on an indoor track and have been pleased with the results.
Calibration was easy. On the Garmin 010-00658-30 Forerunner 405CX GPS Sport Watch with Heart Rate Monitor (Blue) you can calibrate it using the GPS or a 400m track. I chose to use the GPS and it had me run .66 of a mile. Was easy and seems to be pretty accurate. The only issue is that you need to calibrate it at the pace you usually run at. For instance I usually run at a 10 minute/mile pace but since I was only running .66 miles while calibrating it I ran at a much faster pace throwing it off a bit.
Running on a .10 mile indoor track after 3.5 miles it was off by about 50' more by the end of the run. Not perfect by any means but I could probably calibrate it more (or you can adjust it manually) to key it in.
I don't use it running while outside, but if you don't like the pace setting of the GPS you can have the watch display pace according to the foot pod instead.
Installation and removal is easy. The instructions say it will fit in an insole pocket if your shoe has one, but mine does not. To attach it to the laces you slide the mounting bracket under two X's where your shoe laces cross then snap the pod over the top. To remove you have to press a tab that unhooks it. It's very secure and takes a lot of pressure to remove it. I have no fear that it will come off while running.
I am very happy with the pod, it works very well, and is easy to use. If you want to use your GPS watch on a treadmill or indoor track during the winter months, it's a must have.Garmin Foot Pod Overview

3 FT Digital Audio Optical TOSLink Cable Optic 3ft ReviewOK, you have been shopping for cables to finish off your new home theater system and time after time a salesperson tells you about MONSTER cables. Well, when it comes to HDMI or Red/Blue/Green component cables, getting something nice with gold fittings is the way to go but spending big bucks to buy the MONSTER brand name is way over rated. Search our some similar but way cheaper cables on Amazon.com. Now regarding these optical cables. Brand means nothing. Transferring a light signal is transferring a light signal. A gold fitting means squat. As long as the optical cable you buy delivers the light signal from a cable box to your TV or audio system, you good to go. Example, I purchased a MONSTER Cable on sale for $38 bucks before I saw this cable on Amazon.com. Glad Circuit City has a 30 return policy with receipt because I sure used it. Once my less then less than a buck optical cable arrived and I saw that it delivered a light signal just like the MONSTER cable with the MONSTER price did, I returned that overpriced cable faster than you can say jack rabbit. When installing your optical cable, look close at the shape of the fitting and the shape of the whole it goes in. Kinda trick to make sure you are placing it in correctly and push it in snug. Do not jam it in without lining up which side is up. Also, do not crimp the cable. You are dealing with fiber optics here so keep the cord from bending at a sharp able to keep your light passageway from getting blocked. ENJOY AND SAVE BIG BUCKS.3 FT Digital Audio Optical TOSLink Cable Optic 3ft Overview

Pyramid PR2500/SEA2500X Professional Home Studio Pre-Amplifier ReviewI have two computers connected to my TV/Entertainment system and purchased this unit to balance the volume from my computers to my TV. Prior to this, I had to turn the volume on my stereo way up to hear movies played from my computers or when playing games. Switching back to TV without first lowering the volume would just about blow my speakers. I'm really happy with the amount of gain I was able to correct for on my computers and now switching between computer/TV I don't have to worry about volume. One thing that would have been nice is a simple remote to toggle between inputs, but for the bargain price and as often as I will need to change inputs, it's really not an issue. There was little to no noticeable noise added with the unit. I would recommend it for anyone wanting to boost the volume from a low power device to a home stereo.Pyramid PR2500/SEA2500X Professional Home Studio Pre-Amplifier Overview

X16 Small Office Digital Phone System Bundle with 8 Phones Titanium Metallic (XB-2022-28TM) ReviewI bought this as a replacement phone system for our family business office. I thought I was taking a gamble since this system is priced so far below the other modular systems out there, but it is great so far Phones seem durable and look good. This system was so easy to set up. If you can set up a wired network router this will be a breeze. I needlessly bought a 5-port splitter as this kit came with 2 (you only use 4 of the ports on each). To set it up you simply plug in up to 4 incoming lines and then plug the splitter in and use up to 4 ports on each for the phones. If you buy more than the 8 phones included you will need another splitter or two. Programming the extension numbers is simple and using the phones is very intuitive. For now we aren't using the answering machine as we still use voice-mail through the phone company, so I had to set the delay for the auto-attendant to 20 seconds so voice-mail will pick up before the system. Also there is some hold music that plays as a default that the first few callers complained about, so we have turned that off as well. Very pleased with the system and highly recommend it.X16 Small Office Digital Phone System Bundle with 8 Phones Titanium Metallic (XB-2022-28TM) Overview

Sony Docking System for iPod with Wireless Subwoofer (Black) ReviewI really struggled with deciding on the "right" iPhone dock for me. I considered the Bose SoundDock II and the SoundDock 10 and yes, they have outstanding sound quality but I just wasn't ready to fork over $300 and $600 respectively. I also considered the Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin and didn't purchase for the same reason. With that being said, I continued to search and happened upon the "Sony Air" concept at Best Buy. I plugged in my iPhone and loved the sound. Since this unit has a separate wireless sub-woofer, you get the benefit of a full sound experience! The highs are very crisp and the bass provides the missing link that completes the experience. The sound quality is amazing and when compared to the SoundDock II, the Sony wins without question.
Another advantage over the Bose is the fact that you can expand this system by purchasing additional wireless speakers(up to 8) for other rooms in your home. This is a feature that's not available from the Bose offerings.
Overall, for about 1/2 the price of the entry level Bose (SoundDock II), Sony offers an outstanding package that delivers a very satisfying sound experience. Highly recommended!
Good luck with your purchase!
BTW, for those of you who have the iPhone 4, you don't have to remove your bumper to dock your phone!Sony Docking System for iPod with Wireless Subwoofer (Black) Overview

iHome iH16 Portable Speaker System for iPod (Lilac) ReviewIt stopped working after few months. What more can be said? Their customer service is a joke, and their employees are rude. Don't bother with the reviews written by their workers. Notice how many people are having the same exact problem after using it for a period of time, as opposed to the people who have just pulled it out of the box and used it. It works out of the box, yes, but it stops working after a few months and you are left with a product that ihome no longer cares about you owning.iHome iH16 Portable Speaker System for iPod (Lilac) Overview
This stylish travel iPod alarm clock is great for home or on the go. Wake and Sleep to your favorite music while charging your iPod.

Wake or Sleep to iPod Waking up to your favorite music is a great way to start the day. The iHM16 lets you wake to your iPod, gradually increasing the volume so as not to jar you out of sleep too forcefully. If there is no iPod present or there is no music detected on the iPod at alarm time, the iH16 will automatically switch to buzzer alarm, to make sure you get there on time. The requisite nine-minute snooze is also included, since it takes some of us a little longer to get out of bed.

You can adjust the sleep timer from 90, 60, 30 or 15 minutes, and the sleep features a volume setting independent from the alarm volume.

Charge Your iPod While you're recharging in your sleep, your iPod's filling up on electricity, so when you hit the pavement your iPod will be ready to go.

Dimmer Settings The snooze button also changes the dimmer, so you can adjust the display to your desired brightness. Choose from three settings.

Sure Alarm Provided you have installed four "AA" batteries, you'll still make it to work in the event of a power outage, thanks to iHome's "Sure Alarm" backup feature.

Quality Sound The iHM16 delivers great sound thanks to iHome's specially designed Reson8 speaker chambers. Reson8 is iHome's through-body ported speaker chamber technology. Porting speakers gives better bass response characteristics, and helps the iiHM16 deliver sound beyond its size.

Auxiliary Input The iHM16 features a standard 3.5mm "mini" jack, so you can connect MP3 players, CD players, or most any other audio device.

Three Tasty Colors Get an iHM16 to suit your style--available in lilac, gray, or blue.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 - 3 Users ReviewAntivirus can be a controversial subject. If you ask 20 different computer entusiasts or IT professionals what the best AV product is, you will not only get 20 different answers, but almost as many angry shouts about how horrible everybody else's picks were. Similarly, and only to make matters worse, if you do your research and read the "10 best antivirus products of 2011" articles then you will see that the rankings change all the time. Every year it seems some "who-the-heck-is-that" antivirus product makes it on to the number 1 or 2 spot for the major roundups. More frustrating is the fact that from site to site and review to review, the conclusions can be schizophrenic--with one site's number 1 pick being the other site's worst of the crop. From my own experience, I will tell you that no antivirus is a silver bullet, they all will catch some malware that others miss, and vice versa. Beware of fanboys and beware too of haters. But most of all, beware of anyone who gives you their opinion based on a "story", be it sad or happy. The 1 star reviews angry because they got a rootkit and the glowing reviews saying they've been happily using Antivirus 2010 since forever and have never had a problem.
There's your qualification and sobriety check. Now, here's my measured opinion. I'm a long time Norton user that first came across Kaspersky a few years back when Norton products were getting worse every year. Norton saved themselves with a fabulous 2010 release (and a 2011 to rival it), but Kaspersky who was once a dark horse antivirus no one had heard of has stuck around and made a name for itself. It's a good product and I don't hesitate to recommend it. I often recommend Kaspersky in business environments, but this is more due to the superiority of their Server Administration Kit than their AV Engine itself. Still, their AV consistently ranks among the best, and no I don't care where they happen to fall out of the top 10 in a given year. Try not to get caught up in the horse race there, as there simply is no good objective way to quantifiably say one AV is better at protecting you than another. I've found their protection to be solid and reliable and among the best out there, but you can drive the world's safest car and still get killed in an accident. Kaspersky 2012 is easy to install and configure and doesn't seem to have as many potentially perplexing options as Norton does deep in its bowels. 2012 is not especially efficient (Norton 2011 and Eset's Nod32 seem to have much smaller footprints), but Kaspersky does have a nice Gamer mode that can be flipped on when you want to play games. I've found Kaspersky has difficulty installing on systems previously inhabited (I would say infected, but then my own biases would show) by AVG or Macafee, but that is as much the fault of those products as it is their fault, and its a common problem for one AV to interfere with the installation of another, even after it's "uninstalled". I find that Kaspersky is one of the quietest AV products I've used and doesn't nag you the way many products tend to do.
All in all, there are lots of decent AV products out there, some of them free, but there's only 3 I would wholeheartedly endorse with my personal and professional reputation on the line and Kaspersky is one of them.Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 - 3 Users OverviewKaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 is the backbone of your PC's security system, delivering real-time protection from the latest malware and viruses. It works behind-the-scenes with intelligent scanning and small, frequent updates, while proactively protecting you from known and emerging Internet threats.

RCA RTD217 5-Disc DVD/CD Home Theater System ReviewWe just set this up in our 500 square foot living room over the holidays. And its been working perfectly. Lots of features, power and flexibilty for the price. We also combined it with the Rocketfish Wireless Surround Speakers for total Home Theater Effect!
Set Up: Was simple. Being our first 5.1 System, the copious amount of wiring threw us off at first but we soon had everything connected and tucked neatly away.
Sound and Play Back: 250 Watts may not seem like alot but it fills the 500 square foot space with "rich" sound. Meaning we do not need the TV or Radio turned all the way up loud to hear all the features in the sound. At low to middle volume the sounds from Movies and TV shows come clearly thru each channel, with the rear surround speakers working perfectly in harmony to provide the extra effects. The subwoofer and Center Channel Speakers are also very clear and loud.
Features: DVD/FM-AM/CD/USB connector for iPod & MP3 Players/AUX input for Cable box all work well. I love how it quickly burns CDs right to your MP3 players without having to turn on the computer and dealing with ripping the CD first to your computer's hard drive before installing the tracks onto your MP3 Player. The 5 DVD Tray loads quickly and you can switch between any 5 DVDs/CDs during playback and always go back to where you left off. The FM/AM antenna could've been better and longer but we still get the stations clear. You can easily purchase a better antenna or just get Siruis/XM radio. You can also modify the preset modes easily between Stereo, Surround, SubWoofer, and Equalizer settings which is good and adds flexibilty for what you are using the system for.
Quality and Design: The reason I picked this up was that it was smaller than other similar systems and the design was clean, simple and non-obstrusive. The quality of the plastics, metal and wiring is really good for what the system costs. also the wires are all color coded and easy to follow. It was on par, if not better, than what I saw and experienced from the other $900-$3000 systems sold at the store. PROS:
Very clear and balanced Sound, top notch build quality, easy set up, Tons of features, makes 250 Watts sound like 1000 Watts when set up properly in a 500 square foot living room, Surround Sound theater effects are awesome, DVD playback much quicker and has more features that other pricier systems. Small and Sleek housing and speakers.
CONS:
FM/AM antenna could've been better. Could've used another one or two extra Audio-In ports for Videogame consoles or other devices. (This isnt a problem for us...but I can see it being a problem for the person with alot of gadgets that need to be hooked up to one sound system)
BOTTOM LINE: I totally reccomend this system to anyone that wants something simple, sleek and very functional. And if you don't need a million watts in your home and just want a clean crisp and rich sound without the wires and bulk then this is perfect for you.

Sennheiser RS 170 Digital Wireless Headphone with Dynamic Bass and Surround Sound ReviewI've only had the RS 170 phones for a few days. I had expected to rate them 10 stars because of the excellent crystal-clear sound; but I believe they have a flaw that may render them unacceptable for some people (see CONS, below). I'm giving them 4 stars because they are so good - I should probably rate them either excellent or "not acceptable".
Here is my take - you may not have the same experience or have the same needs or expectations.
TYPES OF WIRELESS HEADPHONES: For those that don't know, there are broadly 3 ways by which wireless headphones receive their signal:
IR (infrared) -- these use a line-of-sight signal and avoid radio interference. They have the disadvantages of short range and reduced mobility (you have to remain within sight of the base station), but they usually do produce a clean sound.
900 MHz -- these are analogue radio headphones. The main disadvantage is susceptibility to hiss and other noise, especially when you move your head or move to another room.
2.4 GHz -- these are digital radio headphones, like the RS 170, and are more likely to be free from hiss and noise.
I bought the RS 170 phones to replace cheap ones I've been using for late-night TV, and which operate on 900 MHz, providing constant hiss, much worse when I move about.
The RS 170 sound brilliant. I've used them for late night TV and movies, and for music (radio and CDs) allowing me to move to other rooms in the house. They're comfortable to wear and I'm sure they'd be great for use on a treadmill or working out. All over my home, and in most of the garden, the sound is crystal clear with no hiss or extraneous noise. Except, that is, for the echo ...
CONS: Having read scores of reviews of wireless headphones, it seems that some people buy them to listen to movies/ music without disturbing other people. For that these phones are brilliant.
But some people buy wireless headphones because they have hearing loss (or just want the clarity that headphones provide) and use them to watch TV while their spouse listens through the TV speakers. The RS 170 phones seem to operate with a slight time shift (delay). If the loudspeakers are also on, albeit at low volume, the effect of the time shift is to produce an ECHO - this is very noticeable with dialogue, and is really annoying.
It might mean that if you listen to movies/ TV, and have the sound coming through the TV speakers as well, the RS 170 phones may not be acceptable.
If you turn the TV speakers down (or "mute") you won't notice the effect, but then no-one else in the room will be able to hear anything unless they have headphones as well.
The RS 170 are of a "closed" design, which means that sound is not supposed to leak out, and in combination with the comfortable ear-pads, they greatly attenuate ambient noise - but they don't eliminate ambient noise completely (they are not "noise-cancelling"). I wrote to SennheiserUSA yesterday morning, and received this prompt response:
"The RS 170 should block out the sound of the TV speakers. Check to
see that you have them on correctly so that there is a nice seal to
block out ambient noise.
Let me know if you have any additional questions."
Eric Palonen
Sennheiser Headphones + Headsets
1 Enterprise Drive
Old Lyme, CT 06371"
It's true that the ear-pad seal does greatly attenuate ambient sound, but it does not eliminate it.The problem is so serious that I cannot use the phones to watch TV if my girlfriend is watching also.
The more expensive model RS 180 is an "open" design - the echo problem is likely to be even worse. The more I think about this, the more I am torn -- if you have hearing loss, you might not notice, or care about, the echo.OTHER FEATURES:
-- sound: The quality of the sound is better than I'd expected.
Listening to movies, I hear subtle sounds that I can't hear with loudspeakers. I can only describe the sound as crisp and clean with adequate, but not booming, bass.
I listened to some classical music CDs (Elgar) with delicate sounds as well as a full orchestra and timpani. The detail is excellent; even when I walk up my driveway the sound eventually cuts out, but there is no hiss as far as I can tell. My previous headphones were all hiss and crackle as I moved away from the base.
-- price. These are expensive, and may not be discounted for quite some time.
-- buttons. Lots of people criticised the prior design (RS 130/ 140) because the rotating volume control could catch on a pillow and move. The RS 170 has buttons for volume, mode, plus bass and [faux] surround sound. The disadvantage of buttons is that they're hard to find by touch alone. I think a lot of people will wind up taking the phones off to press the buttons. One advantage of the design is that the volume-up button is closest to the front and it doesn't take much practice to find it with your right thumb or finger. The BASS and SURROUND controls can be activated from the base unit.
-- bass. The bass is not intrusive, even with the "bass boost" engaged. Fine for me, but some people like exaggerated bass for rock-N-roll, and they may find the bass to be light.
-- surround sound. It's simlated surround sound, and I haven't used it enough to have an opinion. I think I shall wind up not using it (just like the CNET reviewers who tested the prior model RS 130).
-- charging batteries - yes they need 16 hours for first charge, but it only takes a moment to slip in standard alkaline batteries (just don't leave them in when you put the headset on the charger).
-- connecting - connecting is very easy - I took the time to route the wires through the coiled conduit. Some people will want to connect to a TV set. I connected to an AV receiver (I used "tape monitor out") so I can quickly switch between TV, radio and CD player. I also connected them to my iPod, but somehow that seems like a tautology.
-- range - Sennheiser claim 260 feet range. My house was built to defeat cell phone signals and may not be a good test. They work all over the house and in some of the garden and the driveway, but they do cut out at much less than 260 feet. That may just be a feature of my house. I didn't buy them for extreme range and I'm very satisfied.
In summary I think these phones are great - they so enhance the experience of watching a movie that I'm not sure I want to forgo them when watching movies with my girlfriend. The echo problem may be a deal breaker for some.Sennheiser RS 170 Digital Wireless Headphone with Dynamic Bass and Surround Sound OverviewOffering uncompressed digital wireless transmission and excellent stereo sound. New Kleer technology offers precise RF wireless transmission with dynamic bass and surrond sound.

TRENDnet RJ-11/RJ-45 Crimp/Cut/Strip Tool TC-CT68 (Blue) ReviewThis was my first attempt to crimp CAT5/6 ethernet for home networking. I bought a spool of CAT5 and ends from Home Depot and bought this tool online. I had absolutely no problem with this tool. It worked perfectly every time. I only needed it for a short time, but it seemed nice and sturdy.
By the way, don't forget to look up color diagrams and make sure you use the correct twisted pairs together. It isn't enough to just have the right stright-through connections from one end to another. You must match the correct pairs. Although color doesn't matter, you have to pair the expected two at the other end. That's how it does error correction, by assuming the same interference is seen on each twisted pair and cancels out the same signal on both. If you don't pair them correctly, it cannot error correct. I needed a 50 foot run under the house, and it didn't work until I paired the correct twisted pair. Do some internet research on this and print some colored guides.TRENDnet RJ-11/RJ-45 Crimp/Cut/Strip Tool TC-CT68 (Blue) Overview

Sonos Play:5 All-In-One Wireless Music Player (S5, Black) ReviewJust got the S5 about an hour ago. Setup couldn't be easier. Step 1 - connect the power cord to an power outlet. Step 2 - hit the Mute and + button to get the S5 added as a new zone, Step 3 - hmmm....I don't think there is one. Just hit play and enjoy pure bliss.
This is my 4th Zone player (see my other gushing review of the Sonos system on the Sonos bundle page), and anytime my wife asks, "how many of these white boxes you really need?", the answer is always "one more".
Portability is the key feature of S5. Moving it from Kitchen to backdeck is just a matter of unplugging the power cord and replugging at the new location. It's all in one box. And the sound quality is not bad either. With all 4 zone players on party mode - some connected to very expensive Klipsch towers - I have ran around to compare the sound quality at various locations. The verdict - this little guy stacks up nicely against the big boys.
And the iPhone controller is not too shabby either. Don't see the need to buy the new touch controller (CR200).
Awesome product. Pure genius. Just get it.Sonos Play:5 All-In-One Wireless Music Player (S5, Black) OverviewThe original, bigger room, bigger sound all-in-one Sonos music player. With 5 integrated speakers powered by 5 digital amps, the PLAY:5 is a HiFi powerhouse of sound that will astound your ears. Wirelessly stream your entire iTunes library, favorite music services, and thousands of radio stations to any room. Set it up in minutes, and expand until every room in your home is packed with your favorite tunes. Control it all with free apps for your Android smartphone, iPhone, or iPad.

Pyle PTA2 Mini 2x40W Stereo Power Amplifier ReviewI had some extra speakers I wanted to drive with something hooked up to my computer and/or DVD player. I'd been using old stereo component amps but tired of how big they are and wanted to find something a little more streamlined. Well, this unit is exactly what I was looking for-- clean, sturdily constructed, low noise, small size, and exactly the options I would want and nothing more.
Back panel has voltage switch 110/230, fuse access, line out, microphone in, and three sets of inputs. I hooked it up to my 4-ohm speakers, and it kicks up a pretty decent output. Exceeded my expectations.
Bought mine from All Audio Expo via Amazon, and it appears to be brand new in box as originally sealed by the mfg. UPS sure trashed the heck out of the outer box though, but All Audio did an expert job of double-boxing with peanuts so the inner box was fine and the unit is completely undamaged and works perfect.Pyle PTA2 Mini 2x40W Stereo Power Amplifier Overview

Bose SL2 Wireless Surround Link--Transmitter And Receiver ReviewI recently moved to a new house, and didn't want to drill holes in the walls or floor to get the wires to the back of the room. I was somewhat skeptical about this product and concerned with sound quality. However, I'm happy to say there is absolutely no difference between using the SL2 and hard wiring the rear speakers!
a) The system is made up of two receivers. They are both very small, and are easily concealable.
b) The front receiver plugs into the base module with 2 wires (left & right speaker wires)
c) The rear speakers plug into the rear receiver.
d) Installation complete!
This is an excellent product and I highly recommend it to all.

PYLE PRO PT260A 200 Watt 2 Channel Home Stereo Receiver w/AM FM Tuner ReviewI am writing this review in response to an earlier reviewer's comment about the hiss problem with this receiver.
I purchased this unit 6 months ago because I needed a receiver for under $700 that could handle a pair of 4ohm speakers. I was a bit skeptical about just how well this would work, but for less than $100 I believed it would be worth a shot.
Initially, I encountered a similar difficulty with the hiss (as well as some clipping and distortion).
However, as soon as I switched out the 4ohm speakers for an 8ohm Bose set, the receiver sang just fine. A keeper!
(Note that some minor amp hum is to be expected with *any* receiver. The only time I can hear it on this model is when I place my ear directly in front of the speakers. That said, I have noticed over the years that some reviewers can be quick to growl at equipment when the real problem is poor speaker placement. There are several good articles on the web that provide details on how to avoid the audible consequences of positioning speakers too high or at incorrect angles.)
That aside, here are a few other perks of the Pyle PT-260-A:
- At level 10 (out of 40) it provides good background sound. At 20, it can fill a large room and be heard clearly in the next room. At 30, it becomes uncomfortable to the ears.
- The EQ controls are programmed to handle a significant range, with the bass creeping as low as 40Hz (not always the case in cheaper model receivers, which usually only stretch to 60-80Hz). Meantime, the treble only reaches as far as 15kHz, which is actually a strength considering the depth of the bass (cheaper models tend to exaggerate the high end, which is why they tend to be characterized as sounding tinny). All that said, one slight twist of the EQ knobs can make quite a difference. Be sure to play around with different combinations until you land on just the right sound for your speakers and your setting.
- The mic inputs work great for karaoke. Not my cup of tea, per se, but wonderful for children who want to sing along with a CD. (They also will have a lot of fun with the echo control!)
And of course all equipment has quirks:
- For my needs (with only one component connected), the PT-260-A serves its purpose quite well. However, if you intend to input more than one component, there is only one selector switch on the unit itself (though there is a separate button for CD, Aux, Tuner, etc. on the remote). In addition, the unit sets to Tuner each time it powers up (which then blasts the room with radio static if you don't have the antenna connected).
- If you plan to use a turntable with this receiver, you will need to pick up a phono preamp (there is no powered input).
- The display is a bit cheesy. The EQ meter simply dances a preset light pattern that has nothing to do with the music being pushed through. (Though it can be amusing to watch it bounce out of rhythm with the music!)
So the verdict:
This receiver costs less than $100. For a model that operates on par with more expensive models, it is worth learning to live with a couple of minor bugs.
If you are on a budget, or have children who express an interest in listening to music, this is *the* way to go. If only a receiver of this quality had been available at this price when I was in high school! (In the early 1990s, the cheapest comparable model would have cost $250-350.)
PYLE PRO PT260A 200 Watt 2 Channel Home Stereo Receiver w/AM FM Tuner OverviewThis 200-watt amp brings music to the living room with crystal clear clarity. With plenty of inputs, you won't find this amplifier lacking. It plays AM/FM thanks to the built in tuner - store up to 50 presets! It's equipped with three RCA inputs on the back and two ¼" mic jacks on the front, so you can turn this amp into a karaoke machine - even add an echo effect. Easily adjust the volume, balance, treble, bass on the master output for total control of your sound. AM/FM antenna included. Runs on 110 and 220 V AC.

Gpx IT209B 3.1 Channel Home Music System with Ipod ReviewI ordered this because my TV sound seemed to be off. The room I have the TV in is always being used during the day by our toddlers, so surround sound was not an option. I mainly bought it because the TV sound wasn't projecting voices in movies very well, but picked up the music fine, so if you turned up the tv to hear the conversation, you got your ears blown off when music came on.
Problem solved. This speaker system works wonders for sound. It is crisp, clear, and balanced. Best of all it is easy to use. I really have not used it for the ipod docking station at this time. This speaker packs a lot of punch too. I have it set fairly low, and it reaches really far. Movies are better, TV is better as well.
Pros:
Inexpensive (relatively compared to what I have seen in stores)
Easy to install
Great Sound
Cons:
The remote seems to be limited in range or sluggish to respond - I have replaced the batteries, etc
The antenna that comes with the bar, has a limited length of cord, so I can't really get it to where it picks up a good signal
Its pretty wide and takes up the entire width of my TV stand. If you have a smaller TV or TV stand, this may be a little too long/wide for you.Gpx IT209B 3.1 Channel Home Music System with Ipod Overview

Bluetooth Stereo Speaker with Built-in Subwoofer - GOgroove BlueSync THE Powerful 35-watt A2DP System Optimal for PANDORA and Slacker Radio Streaming on Smartphones, MP3 players, Laptops , Tablets and More ReviewALMOST ordered from Amazon fulfilled via Accessory Genie, but ordered from "Accessory Genie" direct, as I had a coupon code for their site & used my paypal (of which I had a credit).. so got a slightly better deal ordering via their direct website.
DISCLAIMER: I wish I could give this 4 & 1/2 stars, but limited by Amazon Rating system! So my review should be rated at a 4.5 stars.
*** BIGGEST REASON I PURCHASED THIS? PLAYS my AMAZON CLOUD COLLECTION SUPER DUPER! (I'm loving Amazon Cloud, take that iTunes!)***
#1) Great price for a good solid Bluetooth speaker.
#2) Good sound quality. Projects sound & carries a signal through 1, 2 or 3 rooms with no issues (depending how loud I blast it and walls etc). Sound quality not quite as good as my iPod "BOSE" SOUND DOCK system, but for jamming whist surfing the net or cleaning the house or just listening to good music, it is great! Better than cheaper or smaller speakers I've tried.
#3) SIMPLE. Plug in, turn on, then set your Bluetooth enabled device to find and pair it up with.
~ It reads as a "Bluetooth Headset" named "GG-BLUE-SYNC" on my Bluetooth devices that locate it
~ virtual plug/play on these devices, all setup is from the device you are connecting to the speaker, there is NOTHING to do on the speaker. It just works!
~ I've tested this out on my android smartphone (Samsung EPIC 4G) and my Sony VAIO L series touch screen PC, my kids phones & mP3 players with no problems connecting or transmitting via earphone jack or Bluetooth wireless.
~ Its Bluetooth EASILY pairs with A2DP equipped audio devices
#4) BASS projects VERY well (good speaker with a good bass level to go along with the standard sound projection).
#5) Lighted indicators on front of speaker to tell if it is connected ("-" & "+" volume buttons blink when not paired w/a device, shines solid blue when actively paired)
#6) Green light to indicate unit is on.
#7) IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A BLUETOOTH DEVICE, IT IS STILL GOOD! As it connects with ANY mP3 player, phone, PDA or whatever that has an earphone jack connected via the back of the machine (no wire included for this). Good sound quality there as well.
#8) ON/OFF switch on back of device.
#9) PORTABLE! Works where ever there is an electrical plug/outlet!
#10) For the size, fairly light, but not so much it feels cheap. Feels solid but doesn't weigh a ton. Can carry it upstairs if I need to easily.
#11) NO skipping, delay or hesitancy, just great playback via a device. NOW.. if the DEVICE has issues, it will project that, but it is NOT the fault of these speakers!)
#12 Compact, good big sound without a big price tag, takes up little space on a shelf, counter or dresser.
#13) Plays whatever is being projected by the device, no risk of incompatible formats. Only limited by the device it is connected to.
#14) NOT proprietary! It plays any/all makes, models & formats of devices and sound. Again, take that certain iPhone & iPod products)
#15) Found I can control the volume to a point on the speakers AND from the device itself. Volume controls on a connected device can regulate to a degree remotely if connected via Bluetooth or earphone jack. SO.. for the loudest sound, set the devices volume to HIGH, and the speakers to high... projects music well with good sound.
CONS:
~ BIGGEST CON: ....No Remote to adjust speaker volume, have to manually adjust front speaker buttons or the connected device, if I get a phone call or something that I have to turn it down quickly. A separate remote for power/volume control would be nice.
~ NOW Compared to my BOSE SOUND DOCK system, it is not as virtual 3D or super surround sound (*but comes VERY VERY close*) and didn't have to pay the $600 price tag for it.
~ Wish it had a handle for easy carrying, but I just wrap it up in one arm if I need to move it, no big deal, but would have been nice.
~ No instructions included in box, but you do NOT need any instructions! (some people may find this a negative, but I didn't once I turned it on, it was so easy) Since all the pairing and connecting comes via the projected device, the speaker is just a speaker. Turn it on, locate it on your device and GO!
~ Wish it had a capability to add another speaker to its connection to get better surround sound action if I wanted it in a big room.
RECOMMENDED FOR: College students, kids, Moms, Dads, garages, homes, offices, where ever and whoever wants a great wireless device, or mP3 speaker. I'm VERY satisfied, and hope this review helps. I searched and searched for reviews for this device, and none were on the internet or Amazon yet, it was too new. If you have questions, ask, as it looks as if I was the first one to take the plunge, and glad I did!!!!! :-)
PS: for anyone that would post a con or bad review of this due to it doesn't have a battery option, this is NOT the type of speaker that could use batteries, it is a good piece of electronics, and not a cheap little thing that takes batteries. My Bose SoundDock couldn't use batteries, and neither could this, as it requires more power of an electrical outlet to do what it does.Bluetooth Stereo Speaker with Built-in Subwoofer - GOgroove BlueSync THE Powerful 35-watt A2DP System Optimal for PANDORA and Slacker Radio Streaming on Smartphones, MP3 players, Laptops , Tablets and More Overview

Emerson Heritage NR305TT Home Stereo System with 3 Speed Turntable, AM/FM Receiver, CD / Cassette Player and Built-in Speakers ReviewI bought this for my mother because she inherited a bunch of records from her father when he died 15 years ago but her mother never told her about the records until just recently, so my mom wanted to get a record player so she could listen to all her old music she listened to with her dad when she was little, i found this on here and it is just so amazing, i even love listening to the records with her because they sound so amazing with this player, also this thing comes with a tape player and a cd player that work pretty well, i got to listen to some old AC/DC tapes i had laying around and stuff, overall i love it and so does my mother, if your looking for a good record player this one is perfectEmerson Heritage NR305TT Home Stereo System with 3 Speed Turntable, AM/FM Receiver, CD / Cassette Player and Built-in Speakers Overview

Altec Lansing VS3251 5.1 Gaming & Music Surround Speaker System ReviewEdit/just wanted to add: This item is somehow not eligible for Amazon Prime, even though it's direct from Amazon! Since the option for 1-Day via 1-click was available, I clicked it... Shipping cost way more than the speakers did! Not sure why it's excluded, since I've bought an over-the-range Microwave and a Lawn mower from Amazon, and have gotten them overnighted for just $3.99 each...These speakers are great! I had an Altec Lansing m604 dock/speaker thing for my Zune and, while it sounds ok, I was looking for "fuller" sound. I tried, for a few days, the Bose Sounddock - the $399 version, since that's the only one with an aux input - and it truly disappointed.
Then I saw this set... I bought this along with a Zune Dock, and it sounds great, is super easy to use, and the remote, in my opinion, is both easy to use and full featured. I especially like that I can adjust the bass, center, surround, and everything else with the remote, that way, I can hide the main unit and forget about it! The batteries the remote came with were junk, which could be why the other reviewer had no range with his remote. I especially like that the "eye" for the remote is detached from the subwoofer/main unit...so that way I can put each component in an optimum location.
Obviously, the sound quality isn't going to rival a $1,000+ setup, but for passive type listening (i.e. when you're not sitting there waiting to hear every breath the artist takes and every time his/her shoelace drags across the floor), gaming, and movies, it's not bad! Do take note that for surround sound with movies/games, your computer will have to have discrete outputs for the rear, front, center, and subwoofer. With an MP3 player plugged into the aux jack, I'm really happy with how well it "assigns" sound to the front and rear speakers.
What I ended up doing was putting one speaker on each wall of my bedroom, and the center speaker directly above the middle of my bed. It's amazing how much easier it is to relax and fall asleep with music all around you! So...in conclusion, GET THIS! Cheapest price out of anywhere I've seen...by far. Also, it blows the socks off of the Bose Sounddock, for 1/8th of the price! I could literally buy a plane ticket out to the Altec Lansing HQ, pick up my VS3251, and fly back, for less than the cost of a Bose Sounddock!Altec Lansing VS3251 5.1 Gaming & Music Surround Speaker System Overview6-Piece Music and Gaming Stereo Speaker System

Emerson EME-NR303TTC 4-in-1 Vintage Classic Turntable Real Wood Stereo System with AM/FM Radio, CD, Cassette Tape, and Full Size Record Player ReviewI liked its design (appearance) and the fact that it could play just about any media I own, from vinyl to CDs. I plugged it in and turned on the radio - sounded good and got good reception, even of hard-to-get stations. Put in a CD - could not read three out of four discs. I popped in a tape - noticeable deterioration of sound quality. Ah well. I put on a record - sound quality plummeted! At that point it sounded like distant music broadcast from a tin can. Since I'd bought it primarily to play records, I returned it to the store the next day.Emerson EME-NR303TTC 4-in-1 Vintage Classic Turntable Real Wood Stereo System with AM/FM Radio, CD, Cassette Tape, and Full Size Record Player Overview
